Reception Outfit for the Groom: Bandhgala, Tuxedo or Indo-Western?

By the time the reception comes around, the rituals are done. The mood changes from ceremony to celebration, the guest list is often at its largest, and the dress code moves towards evening wear. That shift gives the groom more freedom than at any other event, and more decisions to make.

Most of our grooms choose between three directions. Here is how we help them decide.

The bandhgala: the classic reception choice

A bandhgala is structured, formal and unmistakably Indian, which makes it the natural bridge between the wedding and the evening. It works for almost every venue, from a hotel ballroom to a heritage property.

  • Choose it if you want to look formal and traditional without repeating the sherwani.
  • Styling: tonal embroidery, with thread close to the colour of the cloth, looks particularly refined under evening light. Pair it with slim trousers and polished shoes.

Explore our bandhgala suits, including embroidered, pintuck and velvet styles.

The tuxedo: for a black-tie reception

If the invitation says black tie, or the venue is a grand hotel with a Western-style dinner, a tuxedo is the sharpest answer. An embroidered tuxedo lets you keep an Indian signature in a Western silhouette: embroidery on the lapel, the cuffs or across one shoulder.

  • Choose it if the reception is formal, late and international in feel.
  • Styling: keep the embroidery to one focal area so the tailoring still reads cleanly. Velvet in black or midnight blue is especially striking at night.

The Indo-Western: for a modern, relaxed reception

For a reception that feels more like a party, with music, a dance floor and a younger crowd, an Indo-Western jacket gives you ease of movement and a contemporary line. Open, layered and asymmetric cuts all work well.

  • Choose it if you want to be comfortable enough to dance and still be the best-dressed man in the room.
  • Styling: let the jacket do the work and keep what is underneath simple.

Three questions that decide it

  1. What does the invitation say? Black tie points to a tuxedo; formal Indian points to a bandhgala; cocktail or party points to an Indo-Western.
  2. What did you wear to the wedding? If the sherwani was ivory and gold, a darker reception outfit creates a clear change of mood in your photographs.
  3. How long is the night? For a long evening with dancing, choose a cut you can move in comfortably for hours.

Colour for the evening

Evening receptions are lit warmly and often dimly, so rich colours perform best: black, midnight, wine, bottle green and deep teal. Ivory can look beautiful too, especially with raised 3D embroidery that holds its detail in low light.

Planning ahead

Every piece is made to order in our New Delhi studio, usually in one to four weeks depending on the embroidery. If you are ordering for several events, plan them together so the wardrobe tells one story across the wedding. Our groom's wedding guide covers every ceremony, and the studio is happy to help on WhatsApp.
